High street retailer Debenhams have seen a dramatic rise in online sales, in news which will be welcomed by many in the eCommerce industry.
According to the department store’s most recent trading update, online sales grew by a whopping 40% – which made up 14% of the company’s trading figures in the sixteen weeks to June 22. Traffic at the Debenhams.com website was up by 21.7% with mobile visitors the fastest growing viewing platform.
The 200 year-old group’s chief executive Michael Sharp said: “I am particularly pleased we have maintained strong growth of online sales which were up by 40%.
“We are also making good progress on the four pillars of our strategy to build a leading international, multi-channel brand.”
Interestingly, Internet orders now represent 14% of the company’s total revenue. Highlighted sales winners for the retailer were furniture, women’s jeans and maxi dresses – which were up 50%, 130% and 109% respectively.
Earlier this week, catalogue retailer Argos revealed it projects online sales to account for a massive 75% of its business by 2016 – so both retailers have growing expectations for eCommerce performance in the trading years ahead.
